“Rīgas satiksme” conducts trial runs with an almost 25-metre-long electric bus
“Rīgas satiksme” is conducting trial runs on the streets of Riga with an unusually large electric bus that has arrived in Riga from Poland. The almost 25-metre-long vehicle is operating without passengers in order to comprehensively assess its ability to navigate the capital’s road infrastructure and traffic flow. The vehicle being tested is 6 metres longer than the largest vehicles currently operated by the company. The experience and data gathered during the trial period will provide an important basis for considering the introduction of such a vehicle on bus and trolleybus routes in the future.
The vehicle is 24.8 metres long and consists of three sections connected by two articulated joints. The electric bus can carry up to 183 passengers at a time, while a full charge provides a range of up to 260 kilometres, depending on weather and driving conditions. Unlike the buses and trolleybuses currently operated by “Rīgas satiksme”, the vehicle’s doors open outwards rather than inwards.
Several key aspects will be assessed during the trial runs, including the suitability of stops and terminal points, manoeuvrability on city streets and infrastructure readiness. The tests will assess how the large vehicle approaches existing stops and manoeuvres at route terminals, as well as how the three-section bus handles Riga’s specific traffic junctions and intersections. The tests will also determine whether the “Rīgas satiksme” maintenance facilities and technical equipment are suitable for the daily servicing and maintenance of a 25-metre-long vehicle.
