Rīgas satiksme has announced a design contest for the reconstruction of the trolleybus depot No. 2
Rīgas satiksme has announced a design contest for the reconstruction of the trolleybus depot No. 2 at Jelgavas iela 37 in Riga. The aim of the design contest is to obtain an urban, architecturally sound solution for the creation of a new multifunctional trolleybus depot with high energy efficiency and the ability to adapt to future development directions, as well as to obtain a partner for further development and supervision of the construction project.
The trolleybus depot No. 2 was opened 57 years ago. Today, the depot maintains around 160 trolleybuses and employs around 350 people. There is also a hydrogen production, refuelling and storage station next to trolleybus depot No. 2, at Vienības gatve 6.
Member of the Board of Rīgas satiksme, Jānis Golubevs: “The trolleybus depot No. 2 is the largest in the Baltic states, with around 350 employees – drivers, repair technicians, dispatchers, cleaners, painters and other specialists. However, the existing premises are outdated and no longer meet the technological and working environment requirements. We therefore want to find a sustainable and energy-efficient solution that not only improves the functionality of the depot, but also promotes the development of environmentally friendly public transport in Riga.”
Designs must be submitted by 28 July. The prize fund for the design contest is up to EUR 30 000.
